The vocabulary that decides what your bet is worth
Racing carries a set of terms that exist nowhere else in betting, and every one of them changes what a slip is actually worth. An each-way bet is not a hedged win bet; it is two bets, and it costs twice what people expect. A price taken at the counter is not the same instrument as a bet left to run to the starting price, and the difference only becomes obvious when a horse is withdrawn. Place terms are not a bookmaker's generosity but a schedule tied to how many runners there are and whether the race is a handicap. None of this is secret and none of it is complicated, but almost all of it is assumed rather than explained, including on pages written by people paid to bring you in. This page explains the conventions. It quotes no prices, because prices belong to whoever is quoting them.
The four conventions worth learning first
These apply across British bookmakers rather than to any one of them, which is why they remain accurate long after any particular offer has been withdrawn.
Each-way is two bets on one line
A win bet plus a place bet, so the total staked is twice the unit stake — a £5 each-way single costs £10. The place half pays a fraction of the win odds, commonly a half, a third, a quarter or a fifth.
Place terms follow the field
The number of places and the fraction paid depend on the race. As a widely published schedule: handicaps of more than fifteen runners pay four places at a quarter; twelve to fifteen runners, three places at a quarter; other races of more than seven runners, three places at a fifth; five to seven runners, two places at a quarter; fewer than five, win only.
Board price or starting price
Take a price now and it is fixed. Leave it and the bet settles at the starting price, which for British races is set from a sample of bookmakers' prices at the off by a method the regulator describes as a median.
Withdrawals treat the two differently
In the United Kingdom the stake on a starting-price bet is returned if the selection is withdrawn before the race starts. On a fixed-odds ante-post bet the stake is retained by the bookmaker. That asymmetry is the real cost of taking an early price.
The questions that arrive most often
How much does a £10 each-way bet cost?
Twenty pounds. An each-way bet consists of two separate bets — a win bet and a place bet — each carrying the stake you named, so the total staked is double the unit stake. The same applies to multiples: a £5 each-way treble is a £5 win treble plus a £5 place treble, and costs £10. This is the most common misunderstanding in British betting and it is entirely avoidable once the structure is clear.
What does SP mean on a betting slip?
Starting price: the odds prevailing on that selection in the on-course fixed-odds market at the moment the race begins. For British racing it is determined by the Starting Price Regulatory Commission from a sample of independent bookmakers' prices, ordered from longest to shortest and split in half, with the returned price being the shortest odds available in the half containing the longest odds — a method the Commission itself describes as a median. Its purpose is to settle winning bets where no fixed price was taken.
What is best odds guaranteed?
It is an arrangement offered by some bookmakers under which, if you take a fixed price and the starting price turns out to be longer, a winning bet is paid at the starting price instead. The point of it is to remove the hesitation people feel about taking a price too early. It is a conditional promise like any other, so its boundaries — which meetings and which markets it applies to — matter more than the headline. We have not read this operator's current version and quote none of it.
What happens if my horse does not run?
It depends which kind of bet you struck. On a starting-price bet in the United Kingdom the stake is returned when the selection is withdrawn before the race starts. On a fixed-odds ante-post bet the bookmaker keeps the stake — that is the trade you accepted in exchange for an early price. Where a withdrawal happens too late for the market to be re-formed, bookmakers apply a deduction to winnings on bets already struck; the scale used is published in their own rules, and we have not verified this operator's current version.
